This is a relatively new sub specialty, borne out of the growing awareness, that skin diseases can cause immense psychological distress and even psychiatric disorders. Due to the psychological trauma, caused by acne and other skin disorders, complications of the original skin disease, can arise.
Current data, derived from the Association of Psychocutaneous Medicine, in North America, revealed that 60% of dermatology clients, were affected by their skin condition. The surveys showed that clients suffered psychological distress, ranging from depression, anxiety, psychiatric disorders and psychosocial disorders. The effects of acne, often impact on people who are in contact with the person who has acne, by affecting the way the person functions socially, thereby impacting on relationships. One of the largest problems is low self esteem.
Medical Doctors, with an interest in dermatology and Dermatologists, are now being trained in this area of medicine, which deals specifically, with the psychological as well as the practical aspects, of treating clients, with psychological trauma attributed to acne. They are able to offer, ongoing counselling, medication and advice on treatments available.
