An Esthetician is a qualified non medical skin care specialist. They undergo 260-600 hours of stringent training, with written and practical examinations. The main areas of study, are anatomy, cosmetic chemistry and skin structure and function. Branches of their practical training, include, beauty treatments for the skin, facials, hairstyling, manicures, pedicures and cosmetics. Treatments for the skin include, exfoliation, light chemical peels, body waxes, deep pore cleaning, cleansing out non inflamed blackheads, microdermabrasion, massage techniques, hair removal hydrotherapy, polishes, wraps and face masks. They can give advice on proper skin car and can recommend appropriate skin care products, for your skin type. After qualifying, they are required to participate in post graduate education, to keep updated in their field.
Basically, they are qualified to perform certain skin care procedures on the superficial epidermal layer of the skin. They can assess the condition of the skin, and type of skin, then use appropriate products to help rejuvenate the skins health. They are schooled in the use of machines, which can improve the overall health and appearance of the skin.
Estheticians cannot diagnose skin conditions, suggest treatments for them or prescribe medicines outside of cosmetic products. They also cannot treat cystic or nodulocystic and inflamed acne skin.
Estheticians, working environment ranges from Spas, Beauty Parlours, Hairdressing Salons, Hotels, Salons, to GP surgeries, where they can compliment medical treatments. Some work with Dermatologists, either at their surgeries or through a referral system.
If you do decide to seek help from an Esthetician for an acne skin, let your GP know you are going to do this, and research the facility before booking an appointment. Try to get recommendations beforehand, on your choice of Esthetician. Visit their surgery beforehand, to assess the cleanliness of the place, and to check out the Estheticians qualifications and experience. All treatments should be carried out in a relaxed and caring atmosphere.
