Stress

Stress plays a huge role in many adult acne situations and it must be treated properly and seriously.

Although stress may not be the cause of acne it is thought they are related. Some of the reasons for a stress-related acne breakout can be due to being depressed or aggravated by something as well as external and internal factors.

A stress-related breakout can irritate the skin and can cause the skin which is already acne prone to flare-up. A stress-related breakout can irritate the skin and can cause the skin which is already acne prone to flare-up. When you are stressed you become tense which causes your adrenal glands to work, flooding your bloodstream with the cortisol hormone. Your sweat glands then produce more oil which in-turn blocks pores trapping bacteria inside, resulting in acne.

Managing/treating stress is not the same for everyone: we all have our own way of dealing with our symptoms. Here are some methods you might like to consider for managing/treating stress:

  • Relax by reading, taking a warm bath, listening to music.
  • Getting a goodnight’s sleep can help the body feel refreshed, calm the nerves and make you feel energised – preventing you from feeling anxious and easily stressed.
  • Eating a healthy diet which includes fruit, vegetables and lean meat. Try to cook them in a healthy way.
  • Don’t allow yourself to become constipated: constipation is a major factor to stress-related acne. Constipation can cause toxins which in turn block the pores. To help prevent constipation add more fibre and water to your diet. It may be necessary to use a laxative, however before doing so you should consult your doctor.
  • Investing in some over the counter medications such as wipes and creams. You may find this to be more economical than prescription treatments.
  • Keep your skin pores clear so that they don’t become blocked and irritated. This will prevent blemishes and inflammation. Avoid grease, oils and the sun - too much oil, grease and/or sun can block pores and trigger acne.
  • Try to avoid stressful situations which can cause you to become depressed, have low self-esteem and or anxious.
  • Seek help from others who can provide support and advice.

It is always advisable to discuss your symptoms with your doctor prior to embarking on a treatment regime for stress.
