Acne around the mouth can occur at any age. It is however, more prevalent in young and middle aged women where flare ups often coincide with the menstrual cycle and the use of contraceptive pills. Men are not immune, but the condition is less common. The acne can manifest as blackheads, whiteheads and papules to inflamed cysts. They more commonly occur in the folds or creases in the skin around the mouth. But, before deciding that you have acne, it would be wise to consult your GP and get a proper diagnosis as other skin conditions may be attributable to the outbreak of spots. Herpes and Seborrheic Dermatitis quite commonly affect this area. Another condition which can affect mainly men in this area is Pseudofollicullitis Barbae, caused by in growing hairs. A proper diagnosis is essential, so that the correct treatment can be applied.
Perioral acne can be triggered by the over use of moisturisers, make-up, and even topical creams. The first line of action therefore is to stop using these and see if the skin improves. Keep the skin as clean as possible around the mouth. Toothpaste could also have an effect. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and Fluoride toothpastes may cause a reaction, especially if you drool whilst asleep. After cleaning the teeth, carefully wash away any toothpaste around the mouth with cold water and rinse the mouth out with an antibacterial mouthwash. Change your toothbrush regularly as it can harbour bacteria. Biting fingernails can also be a source of the spread of bacteria around the mouth, as can lip glosses and lipsticks. So, generally keep the mouth free of any source of bacteria spread.
Topical cider vinegar and Aloe Vera Gel, gently dabbed on the skin, has been known to help with flare ups. For men, there are green razors and titanium disposable razors available which help to prevent the spread of infection, otherwise your GP can help with a topical preparation.
